So you know that here at my little cupcake, we use local ingredients to create our mini cupcakes. Now say you get a craving for one of our delectable creations. Well, you could always venture out to our flagship store in Essex, VT (in the Essex Town Center), or you could wander over to our recently opened Burlington, VT store at 217 College Street. To make things a bit easier on you, our stores are easily recognizable by our smiling cupcake logo on our windows.

Now comes the hard part. You walk into one of the stores, and directly in front of you is a large display case with tons of cupcakes; so what do you get? I am guessing your first thought is "cupcake," but then something catches your eye...

Is it a lollipop? No, its a cake pop! "What is a cake pop?" you might ask. Well, think about it like a lollipop version of a cupcake. The cake and butter cream are mixed together and dipped in white or dark chocolate. Then they get covered in a complimentary topping. For instance, our salted caramel cake pop is drizzled with a salted caramel topping (pictured above). Now that sounds like good sweets.
But maybe cake pops don't sound like your thing; you are more interested in finding a more substantial dessert you can sink your teeth into. So you continue to scan the display case when you notice it: the whoopie pie. The whoopie pie is a cake sandwich. Similar to an ice cream sandwich in shape, but instead of cookies on the outside, it's cake, and instead of ice cream in the middle, it's buttercream frosting. Now that really is something you can write home to mom about. Your watch also tells you it is lunch time, so a dessert sandwich makes sense.

So you have made your decision, you now are the proud consumer of a delicious whoopie pie. While you are paying, it suddenly dawns on you that this evening is a friend's birthday party and you are in charge of the cake. She happens to be a vegan, and her husband is allergic to gluten. But you need to get something, so you take a risk and ask if my little cupcake has gluten-free cupcakes. The salesperson behind the counter enthusiastically responds with a yes, and directs you over to the gluten-free flavors of the day. Conveniently next to those cupcakes are some clearly labeled vegan cupcakes (like the apple cider flavor pictured below). Oh how perfect could this be? You get 12 mini cupcakes, of assorted gluten-free and vegan varieties, pay, and go on your way.**

As you walk away you have your not so lunchtime sandwich, the whoopie pie, in one hand, and the 12 mini cupcakes that your friend and her husband can eat for her birthday dinner later that night. And the best part? You are as happy as can be. I call that success.

Have you ever wondered what goes into a cupcake? There are the obvious ingredients: flour, sugar, butter, and a little bit of love, but after that, it is up to the bakers. Some might add chocolate and others might add berries, but here at my little cupcake we add a touch of local. That's right, I said local. When possible we use Vermont-made ingredients to create our bite-sized, miniature cupcakes. Our butter (and boy do we use a lot of butter) comes from none other than the Cabot Creamery, made famous by their cheese. Cabot butter comes to us straight from Cabot, VT, only about an hour east of our Burlington bakery. We're proud to support such an honest local creamery.

No, not that King Arthur. Our flour comes from the King Arthur Flour company. Now, I am sure you are wondering how flour can be a local ingredient. Well, devoted cupcake eater, King Arthur Flour is located about an hour and a half away in Norwich, VT. Some of these places might not seem local, but in our case, we are still able to celebrate our Vermont pride.

We also celebrate it with chocolate! Barry Callebaut Chocolate, our chocolate supplier is located about a half hour north in St. Albans, VT.

But the fun doesn't stop there. my little cupcake tries to buy locally grown ingredients, no matter what we need to use it for. We have milk products delivered from Shadow Cross Farms, in Colchester, VT and coffee and espresso products from Black River Roasters, in Burlington, VT. We even went so far as to have our cupcake stickers created by a local label company and our mural, cupcake decals, and my little cupcake t-shirts created by New Duds, in Colchester, VT. Local is in our brand, through and through. So now it is your turn, stop by either of our shops, and see if you can sense Vermont in our brand.

i made these salted caramel cupcakes (bottom row, right side) for city market, sweet clover, and healthy living's tuesday's delivery. i think they were a delicious combination of sweet and salty. i topped a chocolate cupcake with a caramel swirl buttercream, drizzled it with homemade caramel sauce, added a little caramel bit on top and then sprinkled it with a little sea salt...yummy!

i delivered these four flavors to city market this morning...chocolate raspberry, mocha, cookies and cream and sundae. i put gummy raspberries and chocolate covered espresso beans on the chocolate raspberry and mocha cupcakes. the sundae cupcakes look so pretty; they are so colorful :)

i dropped off my first delivery to city market this morning. the shelf wasn't quite ready yet, so i didn't get to see the cupcakes on the actual shelf...so, i stopped by after work to take a peek. they looked so cute! and a bunch of 4 packs had been sold! there was only one box left of the chocolate peanut butter...it seems to be the favorite.

i ordered some chocolate transfer sheets a couple of weeks ago to use with chocolate for chocolate toppers. i think they look really pretty on top of the strawberry buttercream.

it all started with this cookbook that my boyfriend got me for xmas. i've been wanting to learn how to make macarons for a long time, but every recipe i found was so intimidating! this cookbook is great and really explains everything step by step.

and i love marshmallows...really, really love marshmallows, so i got this cookbook so that i could make my own.

and then a thought occurred to me...i should make these and maybe sell them at the farmers' market...and wouldn't it be cute if the logos were as cute as the my little cupcake logo? yes, of course it would be cute :) so i contacted sarah, who made my little cupcake logo and gave her an idea of what i'd like...this is what she came up with.

aren't they the cutest! she is so talented...if you need a logo or artwork...you should contact her. stay tuned for macaron/marshmallow/cupcake updates :)

i was so excited to find this cupcake cookbook at the christmas tree shop for $3.99. i've seen it before, but it's always been about $13. one thing i love about it so much is that it has a photo of every recipe; i absolutely love when cookbooks have a photo for every recipe and won't buy a cookbook if it doesn't have a photo for most recipes.

i decided to try out two new recipes that looked really yummy. first was the malted milk cupcake. i already have a malted milk cupcake availabe, but it consists of a chocolate cupcake with malted milk frosting. this cupcake has malted milk and brown sugar in the cupcake recipe. this photo is the photo from the cookbook...i think the frosting is too simple, but i love the chocolate chips in the cupcake!

the second recipe is really adorable and with easter on its way, i thought this cupcake would be perfect. it's basically a vanilla cupcake with toasted coconut made to look like a bird's nest. it's topped with a little candy egg.

this is how my malted milk cupcake turned out...i piped the frosting out with a decorating tip and topped the cupcake with a whopper. the verdict: the cupcake is too sweet! i think i'm going to stick with the chocolate cupcake with the malted milk frosting.

this month, mary ann from meet me in the kitchen picked s'mores cupcakes. okay, i must admit, i'm kinda cheating this month because i've already made these cupcakes...and let me tell me, they are a huge hit! i actually made them a couple of times last summer for the farmers' market and they sold out both times!
i opted not to make the very complicated-sounding cooked gelatin frosting, instead making a yummy marshmallow fluff frosting. i also added a hunk of hershey chocolate to each cupcake and sprinkled each with crushed graham crackers.

i was so excited for the williston farmers' market today because for 1.) it was the day before valentine's day and for 2.) i hadn't done a market since december. i decided to do vanilla squared, red velvet and fauxstess with a pink center and pink loop de loop. i just got a new piping tip and used it for the first time on the pink vanilla buttercream. i think these might be some of the prettiest cupcakes i've done to date...vanilla squared, red velvet and fauxstess

i bought a new blue table cloth and some darker pink circles for my table the other day. i think the blue/pink combo looks really cute with my logo.

lots of people came by the market today...it was a great day, and i sold out around 1:00!

for this month grandma's kitchen table chose gingerbread cupcakes with cookie cut-outs. thank goodness the cookies were optional :) i decided to go with a simple confectionary sugar glaze, some yellow sprinkles and a piece of cystalized ginger...by the way...has anyone ever tasted that stuff, man is it strong (and kind of yucky) but very pretty sitting on top of a cupcake :) anyhow, the cupcake was delicious (after i took off the ginger) and the simple glaze was the perfect touch.

first of all, i must apologize for posting a day late, but i have a good excuse...apparently, i still live in the stone age! i've recently moved to a rather rural part of vermont and the town does not have the internet yet...yes, you heard me right, does not have the internet. comcast has dug the lines (we know this for sure or we wouldn't have bought the house) but they just haven't "turned it on" yet. so, i've been almost 2 months without internet (except for my breaks at work, one of which i'm on now).
okay, now for the cupcakes...i like sweet potatoes, i like cupcakes, so i knew this cupcake was going to be tasty and it was. the marshmallows worked out perfectly...i was going to make marshmallow buttercream, since i've never broiled anything in my life and was kind of nervous about that, but i decided to give it a go...however, i almost burned the marshmallows trying to great a good shot of them in the oven.
but, they turned out pretty great and they were so yummy!

i halved the recipe and got 30 mini cupcakes...cause mini is how i roll...

now that the summer season has come to a close, i bet you're wondering where to get my little cupcakes this winter! well, you will be able to get your cupcakes at the williston and winooski winter farmers' markets in the coming weeks. i will be at the williston winter market (located in the cafeteria at the williston central school) on november 14th, december 12th, february 13th, march 13th and april 10th, and at the winooski winter market (located at the o'brien community center on malletts bay ave) on november 28th, december 5th and december 19th. so mark your calendars as i'll be having some yummy new flavors :)

i bought the martha stewart cupcake recipe book the day it was released...i mean, went out on my lunch break and paid full price for it at barnes and noble because i didn't want to wait for it to ship through amazon :) so, when i found out there was a group baking and blogging their way through the book, i couldn't wait to join! the first recipe (since i was accepted into the group) is for the pumpkin patch cupcakes. i had made these cupcakes the week before i was accepted into the club for a harvest fair, they were really yummy. i decided to make them again for my last summer farmers' market, and they were a hit there as well.

i followed martha's recipe as written, except i added mini chocolate chips...for some reason pumpkin chocolate chip sounds yummier than plain ol' pumpkin.

i really love the way these cupcakes rise up high!

this is the finished product. i didn't make the little marzipan pumpkins since i was making them for the farmers' market and didn't have time to make 54, but these little candy pumpkins worked out well. plus, i didn't make the cream cheese frosting as indicated in the recipe, i made a pumpkin pie spiced buttercream. it was delicious!

the recipe says that you'll get 32 cupcakes, but i halved it and got 54 mini cupcakes (since mini is how i roll :)

see this cake? it's kinda pretty, right? well, this cake is the reason i don't make tiered cakes, ever. this cake took 9 hours to make, and i probably said the f-word more times while making this cake than i ever have in my entire life. people naturally assume i make cake, since i have a cupcake business, but this cake is the reason i don't...i just don't have the patience, and i admire anyone who does!

i'm buying a new house!

well, what i should say is that my boyfriend and i are buying a new house! i'm so excited; we close on tuesday. now, i'm also hesitate to say it out loud because our closing date has been moved twice already, and the buyer of my boyfriend place financing almost fell though, but as of right now, it is a go...
i love this house! i mean, love this house! it's my dream house because it is a comtemporary...i love how it isn't just a square house. i think it's perfect.

anyhow, i am moving next week...packing sunday and monday and moving tuesday and unpacking wednesday and thursday. you know what this means? i can't take any special orders next week. i will still be at the williston farmers' market this saturday and next saturday, but i can't fill any orders thoughout the week. and because of the article in the champlain business journal, i've already had to say no to 4 people who have called or emailed me asking for cupcakes for next week. it bums me out...i don't like saying no, but...i'm moving into my dream house!

the champlain business journal contacted me a couple of months ago to write an article about my little cupcake for (i was told) the october issue. i picked up the september issue tonight while at the grocery store and was surprised to see my face on page 14. although i didn't expect it to be there, it is a really nice article about my little cupcake. if you happen to pick up the september issue of the champlain business journal, you can read the article on pages 13 and 14 (under open for business).

it was great to be back at the farmers' market today...it rained a little, but the market was still quite busy. i made a bit more today than i usually do, and although i didn't sell out early, i did sell out by 2pm! i was talking to lucky lady and new duds (both vendores at the williston farmers market) today. we were discussing options for venues to sell during the winter months now that the summer season is coming to a close in a month or so...i'll keep you posted as to where you'll be able to get your cupcakes after the williston farmers' market closes for the season...stay tuned. peach cupcake with honey buttercream with a peach slice drizzled with honey!

i just got back from vacation today. my boyfriend's parents rented a condo at mytle beach and we flew down for a few days...while we were there, i visited 3 cupcake bakeries. the first one was in raleigh, north carolina. the cupcake shoppe was so cute and the vanilla cupcake was very good.
the photo below is from a bakery called baked. there is a baked bakery in brooklyn and one in charleston, south carolina (that's the one i visited.) the cupcakes were just okay...they are frosted with swiss meringue buttercream, and i am not a fan.
the cupcake bakery below is called cupcake, and it is in charleston, south carolina. the red velvet cupcake was delicious! and the inside of the bakery is adorable!

i'm going on vacation! i will be heading to north/south carolina on saturday so i will not be at the farmers' market. i do plan on attending on september 12th though, so make sure to come and see me then. i'm really excited about this mini-vacation because i'm visiting a few (4 to be exact) cupcake bakeries along the way. i'll make sure to take lots of photos of the shops and cupcakes so you can take a peek :) see you soon...

the last time that the weatherman predicted rain for the farmers' market, i made significantly less cupcakes than i usually do...and guess what, it didn't rain. so this week, even though there was a 100% chance for rain today, i decided to just go ahead and make as many as i do every other week. what's the worst that could happen? i'd just put them in the fridge and on monday, my co-workers would eat cold, not so moist cupcakes, but they would still be happy :) well, it's a good thing that i made as many as i did because people still want cupcakes even if it's sprinkling outside, even if you can't feel your toes...i sold out before noon and as i was driving away...it started to really rain.

despite today being an absolutely beautiful day, it was very quiet at the farmers' market. maybe it was too hot? and it was hot; but, i had a nice spot in the shade, and my buttercream held up quite nicely. i made these chocolate raspberry cupcakes with the raspberries that i picked at the boutin family farm...they were yummy in my tummy :)

the weather was absolutely amazing yesterday at the farmers' market...it was a great day! i made these lemon raspberry cupcakes and they sold out in a flash...i'm going to have to make them again very soon, plus it gives me a reason to go raspberry picking again (which was so much fun!)

i also met some really sweet people at the chocolate walk in richmond. i love how excited people get over my cupcakes.

overall, i had a great day at the williston farmers market today. yes, it was windy, and yes, the duct tape fix on my umbrella didn't work, but i still had a great day. i sold out around 1:00, right before it started to rain, and this morning natalie stultz and her husband david, stopped by the farmers market to take photos of me and my little cupcakes for an article that is being written in the champlain business journel...it's so exiting! i can't wait to see the photo-the photos on her website are amazing! i wish i could say that i had a great day at the williston farmers' market today, but that is not the case! it was so windy...my umbrella broke when it turned inside out which, in turn, caused my buttercream to melt because i didn't have the shade from the umbrella. my signs kept blowing over, my tablecloth clips kept coming undone, and when the wind got under my tablecloth, the cake stands would shake back and forth...it was sooo stressful. thank you for everyone that came out today in spite of the weather!

it was very busy today at the williston farmers market! lots of people came out to see the parade, including my brother miles, his wife dana, and their sweet baby madison!
i made red and blue patriotic cupcakes, red velvet and blueberry.

the blueberry cupcakes were so good, but while i was bringing them to my car this morning, i slipped off the front porch while carrying two tins of blueberry cupcakes, ruining about 25 of them...it was so sad!

today was another fun day at the williston farmers' market; thank you everyone for coming out! although i didn't sell out today (i had 14 left), i did sell more than i did last week! and i did sell out of the maple walnut bacon. i think that it is so awesome that so many people were willing to give it a try, and that so many people were so excited about it! although there were a few people that did look at me strangely while saying, "is that bacon?" it was a definite hit, and i'll probably do it at least once again this summer. another hit today were the frosting shots! look for those every week from now on...

because of the farmers' market, i find myself checking the weather all of the time. so far, we've been pretty lucky at the farmers' market. the past 3 saturdays since we've opened have been pretty nice. but, I just checked this morning and they are calling for rain on saturday :( and this saturday i was planning on baking my maple walnut bacon cupcakes! oh, i'm still going to bake them, and they'll still be there, but i'm afraid not as many people will come out and get to experience their awesomeness because of the rain. well, i really hope that you still come out, and if it starts to rain we can all huddle under my umbrella :)

okay, i hate to do this, but i have to increase my cupcakes prices a bit. the cupcake baking takes a really, really long time (between 7-8 hours for 120 cupcakes, longer if i'm doing donuts and cookies to add to the top), plus the time at the market with set up and tear down...plus the costs of actual ingredients; well, the math just doesn't work. the thing is, i love baking cupcakes and being at the farmers' market so much, i'd probably do it for free, but if i'd like to make this my full time job one day and save up to open a cupcake bakery, i have to make a little money. i think that if i'm going to do it, i should do it now since the market just opened a couple of weeks ago. so, the new prices will be one cupcake=$1.25, 3 cupcakes=$3.50, 6 cupcakes=$6.50, and 12 cupcakes=$12.00. if you've ordered cupcakes from me for an upcoming event, this price increase does not apply :)

i'm both excited and disappointed about today at the farmers market. the good news is that i sold out, the bad news is that i sold out at 1230, and i was down to just 12 at 1145. you see, i look forward to saturday all week, and i actually didn't want to leave early. i baked about 2 dozen more than i did the last two weeks because of the article in seven days, but i had no idea that i'd sell out so quickly. it is so fun talking to people there and meeting new people. one girl said to me, "i was hoping you'd have the maple bacon," this means she's checked out my website! a few others said they're reading my blog. this is all so exciting!! everyone is so nice.

i had a great day at the farmers' market today. it was so nice out and a bunch of my friends came by to support me. i sold all of my cupcakes except for a few vegan and a couple of cappucinno. i feel badly, but i don't think i'm going to make a vegan cupcake everyweek. there doesn't really seem to be a demand for them. however, i will still offer them to people who want to order them in advance to pick up at the market.
